Livingston Receives Funding for Preston Street Sidewalks

Livingston will receive grant funding to help improve sidewalks along Preston Street later this year.

Downtown Revitalization Committee Chair Ray Evans said the funding stems from a Project Diabetes grant used to promote healthy living in the community.

“We had actually done a new playground at the housing authority and we were looking at what else we could legitimately use this money for,” Evans said. “It’s about health and healthy activities, those sort of things. It was noted that people are all the time seen walking out in Preston Street because there’s no sidewalk there. Preston Street is a direct connection between the high school and the housing authority as well as the shopping areas.”

Livingston has previously used funds from Project Diabetes to help complete projects such as Central Park.

“We’ve spent the majority of that money for the central business district area specifically with Central Park, with play structures, adult exercise, shade structures, and such,” Evans said.

Evans said he expects the Preston Street project to be completed within the next two months.

The city is currently in its third and final year for grant funding from Project Diabetes. Livingston has received $150,000 per year the last three years as part of the program.
