Monterey Votes To Pursue Solar Farm Concept

The town of Monterey will look at building a solar farm at the industrial park.

Mayor Bill Wiggins said Hannah Solar will explore the concept of installing more than 8,000 solar panels on the property.

“The board was asked to authorize them to explore the concept and make contacts with potential customers, whether that be Perdue or TVA,” Wiggins said. “We’ll come back to the board if there is progress on that and flesh that out further.”

A representative from Hannah Solar said a 12-acre farm could generate nearly three megawatts of energy.

Wiggins said he believes a steep slope on the property could be suitable for a solar farm.

“It faces southeast and it dawned on us that this might be an ideal place for a solar farm,” Wiggins said. “An array where we could either lease the land to an entity that would buy electricity from that farm.”

Hannah Solar officials estimate a $4 million price tag for developing the project.
