Monterey will begin generating solar power in the coming months.
Mayor Bill Wiggins said Hannah Solar has nearly finished installing solar panels at three different locations.
“Right now they are on the emergency services building with a roof array,” Wiggins said. “They’ve just about completed it and also the one at the water intake station on Hanging Limb Highway.”
Wiggins said the third installation will be a lawn array at the sewer plant down on Woodcliff Road.
“Once we get the new sewer plant, those things are portable so it can be installed there,” Wiggins said.
In the spring of 2017, the town of Monterey entered into a 20-year contract with Hannah Solar to install a number of solar panels around town.
“This particular project has been very perplexing because it’s taken so long for the permitting process,” Wiggins said.
Wiggins said he plans to ask Hannah Solar to attend a work session in February to discuss another solar project.
“I’ve asked Hannah to brief everybody on the prospects of creating a solar farm up on the slopes of the industrial park,” Wiggins said. “We will have a lengthy work session on that to check out the potential there and who we might sell power to.”
Hanna Solar is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia with two other locations in Savannah, Georgia and Asheville, North Carolina.
