Overton Commission To Fill Vacant Seat

The Overton County Commission will make an appointment to fill a vacant seat this month.

The person selected will replace District 3 County Commissioner Harlie McCowan, who passed away in November after a battle with cancer.

County Executive Ben Danner said the task will not be something new for the commission.

“In the last term, we had two commissioners resign. One of them was sick and the other just resigned,” Danner said. “We run it in the newspaper and people who are interested can contact a commissioner and come to the meeting. As far as getting appointed, one of the commissioners has to make a nomination for them and then we take votes.”

Danner said the person selected must also be a registered voter from the 3rd District.

“We’ve got an app now through the state where I can look up and make sure that person is a registered voter in that district,” Danner said.

The county commission had 120-days since McCowan’s death to fill the vacant seat.

The commission’s January meeting will take place on the 14th.
