The Overton County Sheriff’s Office toy drive will help local children this Christmas.
Sheriff John Garrett said the annual program helps an estimated 75 to 100 children each year.
“We run across a lot of unique situations with people or children being in need,” Garrett said. “As adults, we can kind of guide our way out of situations in most cases, but our children can’t. We really want to help as many children as we possibly can, especially during this magical time of the year.”
Garrett said local merchants have agreed to help collect the toys by placing donation boxes inside their stores.
“We also have monetary donations in which we receive,” Garrett said. “The ladies in the office will shop for what is needed, such as clothing items and school supplies through the monetary donations.”
Garrett said the toys and other items will be distributed to local families next week.
“We do the distribution or will allow families to come in if they have reliable transportation,” Garrett said. “We let them come in and have a little shopping spree here at the sheriff’s office.”
In addition, the Livingston Police Department is collecting clothing donations to distribute to needy families this Christmas.
The Overton County Sheriff’s Office toy drive began in the early 2000s and Garrett had made the effort to continue the program since he took office more than four years ago.
