The Roane State Foundation has asked the city of Crossville to provide $500,000 for a project to build a new classroom and science lab.
Councilman J.H. Graham said Tuesday that he wants the council to help move the project forward.
“I would like to see this put on the agenda for next week. These sciences are prerequisites for many career minded individuals in the health care business,” Graham said. “We need to support Roane State and to do this would be a facility that not only Roane State students use, but also our high school students.”
The city’s appropriation would be a down payment for the proposed project at the Crossville campus.
The Roane State Foundation plans to fund the project through private funding and will ask the county to provide the same amount.
Cumberland Business Incubator Director Holly Hanson said the lab and classroom will keep students from driving outside of the county to take necessary science classes.
“We could offer a lot more sciences classes and for the first time we could have chemistry for all of our students,” Hanson said.
The 4,400 square foot project would cost the college an estimated $1.6 million.
The Crossville City Council will meet next week to vote on a measure to provide the funding to Roane State.
