Monterey Alderman JJ Reels is not thrilled with the city’s decision to pass new bylaws for The Friends of Meadow Creek Park.
The city’s Board of Aldermen and Mayor approved the bylaws during last week’s meeting adding requiring a membership fee and board of directors.
“I’m still kind of up in the air about it, I’m not sure the legality of it,” Reels says. “How can a city approve bylaws for a group that’s independent. That’s my concern. I’m not sure how that works but it’s supposed to coordinate volunteers, so I understand their oversight. But how can the city have the purview of being over it?”
Reels says the board should have at least delayed the decision as Reels left the meeting early due to illness.
“I feel like it was kind of pushed through without much argument because I wasn’t there to argue it,” Reels says. “I think that it should’ve been tabled for another month instead of being pushed through when there was no one to really argue the facts about it.”
Reels says it’s likely the city will readdress the bylaws to avoid any potential issues in the future.
“There’s no gray areas in my view, it’s either right or wrong,” Reels says. “We can’t operate on the fringes of right and wrong, it’s either yes or no whether it’s being done right or not.”
The Monterey Board of Aldermen and Mayor is scheduled to meet again Monday, Dec. 3.
