Cumberland County deputies responded recently to a home on the 200 block of Jackson Road for a late-night report of shots fired. When they arrived, they discovered 36-year-old Patrick Lee Evans of Monterey lying on the kitchen floor, barefoot and bleeding from multiple lacerations.
Evans’ eyes appeared red and, when he complained that his head hurt and he needed medical attention, his speech was slurred.
Evans reportedly told deputies he had fired shots at a friend with whom he’d been playing dice, whereupon the friend began to chase him through the woods. Evans claimed to have lost his pistol during the chase, which supposedly lasted upwards of 30 minutes. Evans also admitted to have been drinking, using meth and snorting Xanax while playing dice.
The homeowner on whose floor Evans was found said he didn’t hear any shots and only awakened when he heard Evans beating on his door; he also stated he owns the residence where the shooting took place, which Evans rents from him.
When questioned by deputies, Evans’ girlfriend claimed Evans and his dice-playing companion left the home and when Evans returned inside, he looked “scared” and “like someone was chasing him.” He began glancing toward the bedroom and the living room, then fired a shot into the bedroom. The girlfriend said Evans shot twice more, ran into the back bedroom and shot a fourth time. Then she claimed to have heard glass shattering in the bedroom.
During their investigation, deputies recovered multiple spent casings and noted several bullet holes inside the home – on the inside upper-right corner of the front door; in an interior wall above the front door; in the hallway floor in front of the bedroom door; and through the bedroom door.
Deputies retrieved weapons including a loaded Sig Sauer 9mm pistol from atop the refrigerator, a loaded Remington 1100 20-gauge shotgun from a chair in the living room and a still-loaded, recently fired Taurus 9mm pistol lying on the floor in the back bedroom. Deputies also retrieved various drugs, drug paraphernalia and several live rounds of ammunition, including one 9mm round found in Evans’ pants pocket while he was being placed under arrest.
The Sig Sauer was confirmed to have been stolen from Cookeville.
Evans was taken to the Cumberland Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, then transported to the Cumberland County jail, where he was charged with reckless endangerment, aggravated assault, theft of property and possession of a handgun while under the influence. Evans was placed under $50,000 bond and is due in court December 10.
