Crossville Man Jailed for Fraud, Vehicular Theft

In the process of recovering a stolen SUV late Saturday night, Cumberland County deputies nabbed a suspect on a host of charges.

Earlier that day, the owner had filed a stolen-vehicle report on her missing Ford Expedition. A bank card, wedding ring, iPhone and two chainsaws were also reportedly inside the vehicle at the time of the theft.

Deputies discovered the stolen SUV behind a home on Potato Farm Road, and then found 32-year-old Brandon James Lakins of Crossville hiding in a bedroom closet of the home.

While Lakins was being pulled from the closet, an open knife fell to the floor. The stolen bank card was found in Lakins’ wallet, along with cash and two Walmart receipts; the keys to the Expedition were in his pocket. The vehicle contained the stolen items as well as merchandise purchased at Walmart using the stolen card.

Lakins was jailed on three counts of theft of property and nine counts of fraudulent use of a credit/ATM card. Placed under $30,000 bond, Lakins is set to appear in court December 3.
