Monterey Committee Votes To Extend Trail

The Monterey Building and Grounds Committee voted Thursday to extend the town’s rail trail from Walnut Street to Oak Street.

If approved by the board of mayor and aldermen, the town will use $21,000 from the Standing Stone Health Care trust fund to pay for part of the project. That fund was established several years ago to pay for such projects.

The board of mayor and aldermen voted earlier this month to use a $33,000 state grant to extend the trail from Poplar to Walnut. During that meeting, the board declined an opportunity to extend the trail from Walnut to Oak Street because the state grant would not cover that portion of the project.

The low bid for the Poplar to Walnut project came in at $27,400 and the same price was quoted for the Walnut to Oak Street segment. The grant funding is only enough to cover the first project.

With the board’s approval, the town will use the remaining $6,000 in grant funding to help pay for the extension to Oak Street.

The board of mayor and aldermen will meet for it’s November meeting on Monday.
