Overton County Commissioner Passes Away

The Overton County Commission will look to fill a vacant seat next month after the death of Harlie McCowan.

County Executive Ben Danner said McCowan passed away after a battle with cancer.

“He didn’t know he was sick while he was out campaigning and after he took office he found out he had cancer. It went rapidly and he passed away Friday,” Danner said. “He was really excited about being on the commission and I was really excited about having him.

McCowan was elected to serve his first term as a District 3 county commissioner in August. He previously served on the Overton County Fair Board and was a Vietnam Veteran.

“It’s just really sad to have somebody pass away after such a short time serving on the county commission,” Danner said. “I’d like everybody to pray for his wife and family.”

Danner said the county commission will have 30 days to make an appointment to his position.
