The Baxter community is preparing for a large turnout during Saturday’s Harvest Festival.
Mayor John Martin said the event has drawn the attention of over 500 visitors as they prepare to visit the area via train.
“There will be plenty of food, a lot of activities, a lot of good music, and there’s really been a lot of good work by the Friends of the Depot and Beautification Committee to put this thing on,” Martin said. “We’re really looking forward to it and we’re just hoping to have a beautiful day. Last year it was kind of cool and rainy so we’re wanting it just a little bit warmer.”
Martin said people from all over the southeastern part of the county have attended the event in the past and expects the same for this year’s celebration.
“We’ve had people from Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, and they go into Nashville and ride the train up here,” Martin said. “I even interviewed with a radio DJ from Mississippi last year and it was really neat. They’re really happy to come to our town. It’s a small town but there’s a lot of activities going on.”
Martin said having people come from all over to the Harvest Festival means a lot not only to the city of Baxter, but to the organizations that help put on the event.
“It means a lot as far as raising money for the Friends of the Depot… there was a grant and the city put out so much money to get the grant,” Martin said. “The Friends of the Depot put it on themselves and have been paying the money back to the city. So this is how, through fundraisers, they get the money to pay the city. It’s just a lot of hard work and it means a lot.”
The day of events is slated to begin at 10 a.m. with live music, arts and craft vendors, and a car show. Chris Hensel, formerly of the Dukes of Hazard, will also make an appearance.
