A Jamestown man was transported to the hospital after a single-vehicle accident on I-40 in Cookeville Tuesday morning.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 6:13 a.m. when 19-year-old Austin Gernt began to fall asleep behind the wheel of his 2009 Chevrolet Malibu.
The THP crash report indicates Gernt was traveling “too fast” when he began to veer off the left side of the road near mile-marker 289. Gernt then over-corrected and traveled off the right shoulder, down an embankment, and into trees.
Gernt was taken to Cookeville Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. The THP report indicates Gernt was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident.
