Monterey has asked the Tennessee Department of Transportation to study the Stratton Avenue corridor.
Mayor Bill Wiggins said he met with TDOT representatives Wednesday afternoon.
“I’ve requested TDOT to come over and diagnose what kind of study is needed because that area is where the commercial district is slowly moving,” Wiggins said. “Already we have congestion at certain times in the day and we have some safety issues over there.”
Wiggins said he wants TDOT to look at the whole corridor from Holly Street all the way to Interstate 40, including the intersection at the Burger King where Industrial Drive empties into Stratton.
“I think we need some signaling over there,” Wiggins said. “I like turn lanes, traffic lights, and that sort of thing.”
TDOT also visited Monterey last week, specifically looking at the railroad crossings at Chestnut and Holly.
“What you are going to see later this fall is some real elaborate signaling and marking about those crossings,” Wiggins said. “There’s going to be some signage because we have a potential problem there .”
In addition to that, TDOT will be replacing all the traffic signals at Chestnut and Commercial and Holly at Commercial with new LED appliances. Wiggins said that will be done by TDOT with no expense to the town of Monterey.
