County Hopes To Move Quickly With Sports Complex Expansion

An October meeting with TDEC will start the process for expanding Putnam County’s sports complex.

John Ross Albertson is Putnam County’s parks and recreation director.

“It’s our goal as a department and as county government to see this project through as fast as possible,” Albertson said. “We understand the necessity of being able to expand the sports complex so we want to definitely move the process along as fast as possible and as fast as the state will allow us.”

The county hopes to begin environmental studies and move into the bid letting process after the October meeting with TDEC.

Albertson said the grant requires the county to have the project completed within two years.

“I do not see anything that would keep that from happening,” Albertson said. “I believe it should be an uneventful and simple process barring anything unforeseen.”

Putnam County has received a $333,500 grant to pay for part of the project. The county will be required to match the total grant amount.

Ross said the county will be adding a new entrance off of North Washington Avenue and two new soccer fields.

“It will gain us potentially three more full-size soccer fields by being able to move our rec fields off our existing soccer fields,” Albertson said.

The county hopes to bring in more revenue with the expanded sports complex by hosting tournaments and other sporting events.
