CPD Encourages Safe Driving During New School Year

The Cookeville Police Department reminds people to drive safely as students across Putnam County returned to school this week.

Captain Bobby Anderson said some violations, like speeding in a school zone, can carry more weight than a citation.

“If you are written a citation for speeding in a school zone, that is considered reckless driving,” Anderson said, “which can accumulate six points on your drivers license. 12 points within a year can result in an advisory letter being sent for a drivers license suspension.”

Anderson also advises drivers to be cautious when near school buses.

“Be sure and watch for that stop sign to come out on that bus and to not pass,” Anderson said. “It can lead to a child getting run over or even worse, killed. That also is a high-point ticket as well.”

Anderson said driving while using a cell phone can also be dangerous and may lead to a citation.

“Stay off your cell phone while going through a school zone,” Anderson said. “Bluetooth devices are allowed, but if you’re caught talking on a cell phone going through a school zone you could be fined for that as well.”

The department has multiple posts on their Facebook page reminding people to drive safely now that schools are back in session. Putnam County Schools began the new school year on Monday.
