The Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury’s Office released a report Wednesday regarding the actions of Smithville Mayor Jimmy Poss.
According to the report, Poss created a part-time position for his son, Anthony, paying him $8,100 over a six-month period to work at the city golf course. The report goes on to say Mayor Poss did not comply with city policy, nor did he seek approval from the Board of Aldermen.
The report also indicates Mayor Poss served as his son’s supervisor during his tenure, a role typically held by the city administrator or public works director. Under his supervision, the Mayor did not require his son to maintain time and attendance records for work completed at the golf course.
Smithville’s Personnel Policy states that the city shall not show favoritism when recruiting or hiring municipal employees. The policy also states that no family member should be hired unless a clear business reason is given.
The two were indicted by the DeKalb County Grand Jury and booked into the DeKalb County Jail Tuesday morning. Mayor Poss was charged with one count theft over $2,500 and one count official misconduct with his bond set at $5,000. His son was charged with one count theft over $2,500.
Current Alderman and Mayoral Candidate Josh Miller declined to comment on Mayor Poss’s indictment.
