Algood Police Vehicle Strikes Pedestrian Tuesday Night

A 17-year-old boy suffered injuries Tuesday night after he was struck by an Algood Police vehicle.

The accident happened near the intersection of Main Street and Cooper Road.

Algood Police Chief Dale Armour said the boy darted in between vehicles as he attempted to cross the street from the Walmart side of the road. He was struck by a police vehicle driven by Sergeant Scotty Polston.

“He ran over into his [Officer Polston’s] traffic lane going over towards Fast Pace and the car lot across the street,” Armour said. “He ran out between the cars and Sergeant Polston tried to stop.”

The 17-year-old was airlifted to an out-of-town hospital as a precaution. His condition is unknown.

Armour said his department reviewed data from the vehicle Tuesday night as part of an APD investigation.

“He was under the speed limit at the time. We pulled it last night just to make sure,” Armour said. “It was just one of those deals. The light turned green, he went through the intersection, and the kid ran across the street.”

The Tennessee Highway Patrol will continue to investigate the accident at the request of the Algood Police Department.

Armour said Sergeant Polston is a 9-year veteran of the Algood Police Department with no history of motor vehicle crash information.

“He is very upset and is very concerned about the boy,” Armour said. “Matter of fact, he said last night that they both prayed together while they were waiting on EMS to get there.”

Armour said the boy was talking to emergency personnel before he was transported for medical treatment.
