Obituaries For Friday, June 15

Mrs. Margaret Oaks, age 90, of Baxter, passed away Thursday afternoon at her home. Arrangements are incomplete.

Funeral services for Cathie Henrietta Johnson, 78 of Sparta, will be held at 11am on Saturday, June 16 at Oak Lawn Funeral Home with Jerry Pullum officiating. Burial will follow at Frasier’s Chapel Cemetery. Cathiee passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at her residence. Born Sunday, January 7, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Donald Smith and the late Henrietta Morrison Smith. Surviving are son, Kyle Johnson of Sparta; daughter, Kathi Johnson of Sparta; son, Koby Johnson of Oklahoma; daughter, Stacy Carden of Michigan; granddaughters, Kinsley Qualls of Sparta and Keena Walker of Michigan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Parkes Johnson. Family will receive friends from 5pm until 8pm on Friday, June 15 at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bonnie Jean Head, 83, of Gainesboro, will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Anderson-Upper Cumberland Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the John L. Clark Memorial Cemetery in the Stone community of Jackson County. She passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Cookeville. She was born June 11, 1935, in Gainesboro, to the late Roscoe Sherman Smallwood and Zander Jones Smallwood. On January 3, 1956, she was married to Edis Head, who survives. She was retired from the business office of the Jackson County Hospital and was a member of the McCoinsville Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 3 Brothers: Paul Meadows, Roscoe “Bug” Smallwood Jr., and Tommy Smallwood and 3 Sisters: Louise Jones, Martha Belle Dixon, and Rose Nell Jones Strait. Survivors include her Husband: Edis Head of Gainesboro; 2 Daughters: Delma (Edwin) Hopkins of Gainesboro, and Cathy Flatt of Cookeville, TN; 4 Grandchildren: Jason Flatt, Lyndsey Flatt, Ryan Hopkins, and Chanse (Kaylia) Hopkins; and 1 Great Grandchildren: Kambree Hopkins. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4 -8 P.M. and on Saturday from 10 A.M. until time of the service.

Funeral services for Mrs. Nina Bean Burgess, 75, of Gainesboro, will be held at 2 P.M. on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Anderson – Upper Cumberland Funeral Home in Gainesboro. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Clay County. She passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at Life Care Center of Sparta. She was born September 12, 1942, in Hermitage Springs, to the late Herman Bean and Madge Browning Bean. She was retired from food service at Cookeville Regional Medical Center, and was a member of the New Salem Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 4 Brothers: Charles, Faye, Malcolm, and Darrell Bean; and 1 Sister: Bernice Bean. Survivors include 1 Son: Charles S. Burgess, Jr. of Gainesboro; 2 Daughters: Kimberly (Randy) Brown of Crossville, and Michelle Burgess of Nashville; 5 Grandchildren: Lindsey Brown, Lauren (Landon) Sherrill, Leslie Brown, Mark Brown, and Samantha (Curtis) Shannon; 1 Great – Grandchild: Spencer Shannon; 1 Brother: Delbert Bean of Oak Forest, IL; and 2 Sisters: Rosalene Bean of Oak Forest, IL, and Jean Moore of Dickson. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12 Noon until time of services. Memorial donations may be made to Happy Haven Home, the Arthritis Foundation, or by donating a book to the Charles Ralph Holland Library.

Funeral Services for Judy Phillips, 52, of Cookeville will be held Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 2:00pm from the chapel of Presley Funeral Home with Johnny Fox, Danny Hall and Jim Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in West Cemetery (South) in Cookeville. The family will receive friends on Friday from 3:00-9:00pm and again on Saturday from 11:00am until the time of services at the funeral home. Mrs. Phillips passed away on Thursday morning, June 14th, 2018 in Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. She was born September 28, 1965 in Nashville, TN to James Earl Stafford and Martha Sue Cullum Stafford. Judy was employed at Cookeville Regional Medical Center 21 years, where she was the Production Manager in the Nutrition Department. She will be remembered for her dependability and her reputation of dedication to everything she was involved in. She was even presented an honor upon graduating high school for having perfect attendance all 12 years of public education.

Graveside services for Mr. Weldon “Curly” Roberts, 84, of Cookeville, will be held at 2 P.M. on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at the Richmond Cemetery in Jackson County. He passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at Bethesda Health Care Center in Cookeville. He was born September 11, 1933, in Flemingsburg, KY, to the late Jack Roberts and Thelma Roberts. On February 15, 1979, he was married to Mila L. Roberts, who survives. He was a timber inspector, and lived in Ohio for over 40 years. He loved camping and fishing, and reading his Bible. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 1 Son: David Roberts; 2 Brothers: Jackie Roberts and Buddy Roberts; and 1 Sister: Helen Hamilton. Survivors include his Wife: Mila L. Roberts of Cookeville; 3 Sons: Darroll Roberts of Lexington, KY, Paul Winslow of Cookeville, and Jade Roberts of Cookeville; 1 Daughter: Melissa Hicks of Georgetown, OH; 5 Grandchildren; several Great Grandchildren; 2 Great Great Grandchildren; 3 Brothers: Timmy Roberts, Steve Roberts, and Larry Roberts; and 4 Sisters: Brenda Mahaffery, Kimberly Shelton, Patty Mason, and Robin Frederick. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends also survive. The family will receive friends at the graveside prior to the service.

Funeral service for Kenneth Monroe Dodson, 75 of Doyle, will be at 6pm on Saturday, June 16 at Oak Lawn Funeral Home with Bill Haskell McCormick officiating. Kenneth passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital in Sparta. Kenneth loved hunting and fishing. He was also a fan of the Tennessee Vols and the New York Yankees. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Frances Phifer Dodson; daughter, Rena (Marty) Roberts; son, Freddie Lee Dodson; grandchildren, Titus Logan Crawford and Madison (Hunter) Robinson; great grandson, Liam Hunter Robinson; brothers, Donald (Sarah) Dodson, and James Gary (Pat) Dodson; Sister-in-law, Sherrie Smith and husband, Brian of Clearmont, Florida; special friend, Freddy Guy, and his dog, Hoss. Several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Dodson and brother, Jackie Ray Dodson. Family will receive friends from 3pm until the time of service at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Margaret Jane Cooley Oaks, age 90 of Baxter, will be held Sunday, June 17, 2018 at 3 p.m. at the Baxter Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Smellage Cemetery. Mrs. Margaret Oaks passed away at her home on Thursday, June 14, 2018, surrounded by her family. She was born on Thursday, May 10, 1928, to the late John Henry Cooley and Ollie Mae Thompson Cooley. Margaret was a member of Boma First Church of God. She worked for many years at Acme Boot Company, Holiday Inn and as a childcare provider in her home. She was loved by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, who she spoiled religiously. Margaret was a kind lady and was loved by everyone who met her. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Clarence Fowler Oaks; brothers, James Monroe Cooley and Bobby Leftrich Cooley; sisters, Katherine Cooley Reeder, Minnie Elsie Cooley Powell, Mary Louise Cooley Roth and infant Henrietta Mae Cooley. She is survived by sons, James Glenn (Sherry) Oaks, Jerry Lynn (Judy) Oaks and Clarence Michael (Lisa) Oaks; daughters, Kathy Sue Weaver and Joanie Renee Oaks (Richard) Rodgers; grandchildren, Jamie (Tina) Oaks, Christy Oaks (Shawn) Phillips, David (Alicia) Oaks, Tracey Oaks (Jerry) Tucker, Brian (Jennifer) Oaks, Thomas Weaver, Joseph Weaver, Andrew (Carrie) Rodgers, Jennifer Oaks (Ryan) Kelly and Heather Oaks (Justin Younger); great grandchildren, Tyler Oaks, Madison Phillips, Megan Phillips, Harper Oaks, Knox Oaks, Cason Tucker, Hannah Tucker, Ginny Rodgers, Jason Rodgers, Tatum Kelly, Dimitri Oaks, Nolan Oaks, Harlyn Younger and Ryker Younger; sisters, Dorothy Akers, Ruby (Bill) Shaw and Evelyn Pennington; brothers, Johnny (Jackye) Cooley and Harvey Cooley; and a host of nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends Saturday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again Sunday from noon until service time at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Ms. Carolyn Faye Hyatt, of Sparta, will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, in the chapel of Oak Lawn Funeral Home with Bro. Steve Brown officiating. Ms. Hyatt passed away on Thursday, June 14th at her residence. She was born on Saturday, May 1, 1948 in Sparta, the daughter of the late Bernice and Mary Kate Roberts Huff. She worked for many years at Waggoner in Sparta and loved spending time with her family and friends. Surviving family members include the following: son – Edwin Dwight Goff, Jr (Donna) of Sparta; daughter – Kimberly Mathis (Scotty) of Baxter; brother – Donald Huff (Sue) of Cookeville; sister – Barbara Carr (Roy) of Sparta; grandchildren – Dusty Mathis (Danika), Harley Mathis, Kacie Eller, Whitney Eller. In addition to her parents, Ms. Hyatt was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Bradley. Visitation with the family will be held prior to the service on Tuesday from 10am until 12 noon. Burial will follow in Robinson’s Chapel Cemetery.
