Monterey Officials: Fourth of July Fireworks Unlikely

Monterey officials said it’s unlikely a Fourth of July fireworks display will happen this year.

The city has struggled to find an appropriate location to launch the fireworks for the second-straight year. Monterey Fire Chief Kevin Peters said the fireworks need to be shot from a certain radius away from buildings and structures.

“The size shells that they shoot is a six inch shell and you need 70-feet per inch of shell,” Peters said. “That’s 420 feet in all directions of wherever those shells are located.”

Last year, the Putnam County Board of Education did not allow the city to continue using the Monterey High School baseball fields as a launch site. Property owners also objected to a potential location behind the police department.

“We thought we had that worked out, but one property owner objected,” Mayor Bill Wiggins said. “We don’t have any other city properties to use either.”

Even if a location is found, the city has ran out of time to obtain a permit to conduct a show. Peters said it takes about thirty days to go through the permit application process.

“Plus you have to get with a supplier to get the product and racks to shoot them with,” Peters said. “Being this late, they’ve probably got all of their equipment accounted for.”
