Cookeville Celebrates TTU Baseball’s Regional Title

Cookeville welcomed home the Tennessee Tech baseball team Tuesday afternoon following the Golden Eagles’ victory over Ole Miss.

Head Coach Matt Bragga said winningthe regional title impacts more than just the university.

“I think it’s awesome,” Bragga said. “I think right here, it just shows you that it brings a community together. Anytime you can do that, I think that’s something special. It’s bigger than baseball.”

Bragga said being able to play three games in 30 hours was a challenge, especially against a top-ranked team in Ole Miss.

“To put two losses on them in an eight hour time frame is just remarkable,” Bragga said. “I never doubted these guys. I believe in them, I knew they could do it, and they did.”

Athletic Director Mark Wilson said the team’s regional title helps put Cookeville on the map.

“You think about the industry that occurs here, hosting the BlueCross Bowl games… [it] puts us in a real positive light,” Wilson said.

Dr. Barbara Fleming is a 1971 graduate of TTU and a Board of Trustees member. She said Tech’s success lets people know who the University is.

“It’s great for our athletic programs, but [overall] it’s going to be great,” Fleming said. “Tennessee Tech is a great university and we don’t get some of the press some of the SEC schools do. It’s a great place for your kids to go and it’s a great place to be.”

The Golden Eagles will next play Texas in the Austin Super Regional. Game one is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. on ESPN2.
