Obituaries For Monday, June 4

Peggy Sue Johnson, age 78 of Sparta, passed away Sunday evening at St. Thomas Highlands Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete.

A memorial service for Douglas Charles Stewart, 76 of Sparta, will be held at 7 pm on Monday, June 4, 2018 at Friendship United Methodist Church in Cookeville. Douglas passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2018, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Born Wednesday, May 13, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Elmer and Virginia Bull Stewart. He was a U.S. Navy Vietnam Veteran and a Mason. He enjoyed fishing and working at the Dance Academy. He loved every dancer there. He is survived by his wife, Judith Stewart of Sparta; son, Douglas Stewart Jr. (Terrie) of Glade Creek; daughter, Carrie Stewart Edmonds (Nathan) of Sparta; grandchildren, Emma Stewart, Grace Stewart, Tyler Stewart, Karlee Edmonds, and Ally Edmonds. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Ann. The family will welcome friends from 4-7pm at the church.

Funeral services for Mr. David Victor Hirsbrunner, age 70, of Sparta, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday June 5 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Mr. Hirsbrunner passed away Wednesday May 30, 2018 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 11 a.m. until service time. Graveside service and interment will be at 2 p.m. EST. Wednesday at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY.

Funeral services for Mrs. Brinda Fay Shanks, age 68 of Baxter, will be held Tuesday, June 5th at 3:00 p.m. at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Smellage Cemetery. Bro. Jeremiah Tatum will officiate. Mrs. Shank’s family will receive friends Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and again Tuesday from 12:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Mrs. Shanks died Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Select Specialty Hospital in Nashville. She was born November 30, 1949 in Putnam County, TN to the late Shirley and Hertha Reagan Stewart. She was a 1967 graduate of Cookeville High School. Brinda worked at the Library in Baxter as a manager. She later worked as a sales associate at Belk and JC Pennys. Fun and vivacious, Brinda was always concerned with the happiness of others. Her interests included playing games on the internet and watching her favorite show ‘The Golden Girls’.

Funeral services for James (Butch) Buchannon Cavanah, Jr., 61 of Sparta, will be held at 4pm on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home with G.W. Scott officiating. Burial will follow in Plainview Cemetery in Cassville, Tennessee. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 1pm until time of the service at the funeral home. He passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2018, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Born Sunday, August 26, 1956 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, he was the son of James Cavanah and the late Alma Wells Cavanah. He loved fishing, hunting, and wood working. He is survived by his daughter, Meredith Daoud (Jerry) of McKinney, Texas; son, Derick Cavanah (Holly) of Sparta; father, James Cavanah (Donna) of Sparta; sisters, Gwinda Stevens (Donald) of Smyrna and Trevanda Allison (Tim) of Sparta; brothers, Mike Cloyd (Lissa) of Sparta and Jason Cloyd (Jill) of Sparta; grandchildren, Kathryn Fairman, Jeremiah Daoud, Dayla Cavanah, and Tristen Cavanah; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Billy E. Martin, 80, of Bloomington Springs, will be held at 2 P.M. on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at Anderson – Upper Cumberland Funeral Home in Gainesboro. Burial will follow in the Pharris Cemetery in Jackson County. He passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2018, at NHC Health Care Center in Cookeville. He was born January 25, 1938, in Gainesboro, to the late Thurman Martin and Avon Martin. On July 20, 1957, he was married to Juanita Martin, who survives. He was a truck driver. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 Brothers: Harold Martin and Roger Martin; 2 Sisters: Nell Hopkins and Bessie Emmitt; and 1 Nephew: Christopher Martin. Survivors include his Wife: Juanita Martin of Bloomington Springs; 1 Son: Keith (Jamie) Martin of New Baltimore, MI; 2 Daughters: Sharon (Ricky) Flatt of Baxter, and Tammy (Brian) Marlin of Antioch; 4 Grandchildren: Ben Flatt, Justin Flatt, Mason Martin, and Lily Martin; 4 Great Grandchildren; 2 Brothers: Danny (Jennie) Martin of Gainesboro, and Wayne Martin of Gainesboro; and 1 Sister: Wava (Bobby) Allen of Gainesboro. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends also survive. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 10 A.M. until time of services.

Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Woodford, age 69 of Cookeville will be held Thursday June 7 at 1 p.m. at Cookeville First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Cookeville City Cemetery. Julia died Saturday evening June 2, 2018 in the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Julia’s family will receive friends Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Thursday from 12 noon until service time at the church.

A Celebration of Life of Nancy Clark Taliferro Owen, age 74, of Cookeville, and formerly of Sun City West, Arizona, will be at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, June 8th at Heritage Pointe Senior Living, 1030 S. Maple, Cookeville. Mrs. Owen passed away Wednesday morning, May 23, 2018, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Nancy was born in Davenport, Iowa on April 3, 1944, the only child of the late Paul Clark and the late Marjorie Hostetler Clark Taliferro. Nancy was 17 when adopted by the late W.R. Taliferro of Ft. Thomas, Kentucky. She graduated from Transylvania College in KY. She was married for 35 years to the late Dr. Edwin Owen, who preceded her in death in 2012. She is survived by many cousins in the Cookeville area: Kay & Mike Detwiler, Susan Detwiler Dalton & Larry Suggs, Michael Jr. & Shawn Detwiler, Mary Katherine Detwiler, Levi Detwiler, and Abigail Dalton all of Cookeville. Also cousins Karen & Robert Brown and Mike Brown of Walling, Karlyn & Jake Reel and Jacob Brown of Knoxville, Kelsey & Drew Hawkins of Jackson, TN, Daniel Watson of Blacksburg, VA and Carol & Tom Attig of Batavia, IL. She is also survived by her two step-sons, Andrew Owen and Kobi Conaway of San Francisco, CA, and step-son, John and Cindy Owen of Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cookeville Humane Society; 180 Miller Rd; Cookeville, TN 38501 or the AZ Schnauzer Rescue, 2173 W. Enfield Dr., Chandler, AZ 85286.

A memorial service for Mr. Kenneth Carter, age 87 of Algood, will be held Saturday, June 9th at 1:00 p.m. at Algood United Methodist Church. Rev. Albert Willis will officiate. Mr. Carter’s family will receive friends Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Mr. Carter died Sunday morning, June 3rd at Signature Healthcare of Putnam Co. in Algood.

Memorial services for Ed Edenfield, age 66, of Baxter, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday June 9 at Cookeville First Methodist Church. The family will receive friends Friday from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home and again Saturday from 1 p.m. until service time at the church. Mr. Edenfield passed away Thursday morning May 24, 2018 at his home.
