Crossville residents won’t be seeing an increase to property taxes.
The upcoming fiscal year budget includes of 59-cent property tax rate. Mayor James Mayberry said that rate will be the same as fiscal year 2017-2018.
“Anything that we can do that will help keep the property taxes low and provide the services that the citizens long for is a good thing,” Mayberry said.
One of the ways the city managed to keep the property tax at a low rate was the recent establishment of a 2-percent hotel/motel tax.
The city believes the new tax will generate an estimated $152,000 in revenue.
“That is fund is going to help us out with economic development, tourism, and community development,” Mayberry said.
Crossville City Council members passed the first reading of the fiscal year budget Thursday afternoon.
The budget calls for spending $4.1 million for police protection, $2.1 million for the fire department, and $3.1 million for capital projects.
The budget does have a $1.2 million gap, but that will easily be covered by a fund balance totaling $13.5 million.
A public hearing and a second reading of the budget will occur June 12th.
