Cumberland County students would only be allowed six excused absences under a revised policy approved by education officials Thursday night.
The Cumberland County Board of education approved the controversial policy on first reading as a way to get compliant with a new state law.
the measure passed with a 5-3 vote. Board members Shirley Parris, Josh Stone, and David Bowman voted no.
The board will be voting on second reading of the policy during its May meeting.
The current policy allows 10 excused absences.
