A veteran Jackson County law enforcement officer has taken over the reigns as Gainesboro Police Chief.
The city has named Michael Head as chief of the department. Head said his main goal will be dealing with the drug problem.
“There will always be a drug problem. You can slow it down, knock a dent in it, but I believe there will always be a drug problem,” Head said. “You can do anything you can, but a lot of times when you hit the court, the jails are so full that they just turn them loose.”
Head began his law enforcement career in 1980 with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and started working for the city in 1984.
He said he also wants to focus on more interaction with the public, which is something he’s seen decline over the years.
“I try to get out an interact with the public as much as I can,” Head said. “More or less just be a part of them so you can build the trust up with them.”
Head will have four officers working under him. but he hopes to hire more in the future. He said having a small department and budget makes that hard to accomplish.
