Cookeville Brothers Injured In Accidental Shooting Friday

Two brothers received medical treatment Friday evening following an accidental shooting in Cookeville.

Cookeville Police said they responded to a report of two shooting victims being transported to Cookeville Regional by private vehicle.

The investigation revealed that 28-year-old Jared Sidwell had been cleaning a .40 caliber handgun when it accidentally discharged. The bullet passed through his hand and struck his 30-year-old brother Jeremy Sidwell in the right arm.

Jared Sidwell received treatment at Vanderbilt Medical. Jeremy Sidwell treated and released from Cookeville Regional.

“When handling a firearm, we want to reiterate the importance of controlling where the muzzle is pointed at all times and always treating the firearm as if it is loaded,” Cookeville Police Public Information Officer Bobby Anderson said. “We also want to stress the absolute need to make sure that a firearm is completely empty by visually and physically checking the open action before attempting to clean a firearm.”

Although this investigation is ongoing, Cookeville Police officials believe the incident to be an accidental shooting and no charges are expected at this time.
