Clay County farmers could soon have their own place to sell locally-grown products.
A working group has come together to examine the idea of a Farmers Market in Celina. Clay County Agricultural Extension Agent Jason Shultz said discussions actually began late last year.
“We’ve had several folks within the community that have been hinting at the idea and wanting to push for it,” Shultz said.
Shultz said a number of producers across Clay County sell products at other farmers markets across the region.
“It’s hard to get a lot of them that are established in certain areas,” Shultz said. “If they’re going to the Cookeville Farmers Market, it’s hard for a lot of folks to want to leave a good, vibrant market
and come to something brand new.”
Shultz said the idea arose from an active flea market that sets up at the old Celina School during the spring and summer, selling antiques and other items. During the summer, Shultz said, some people begin selling produce.
Holding the farmers market at the school has been one idea. Shultz said the group also considering a farmers market at the courthouse square.
The working group met last month to discuss the idea more. Shultz said reaching out to potential vendors most important right now.
“We’ve got a lot of people interested in wanting to buy,” Shultz said. “We’ve got plenty of buyers. It’s the sellers that we need.”
Shultz said another meeting will take place in the coming weeks. Gardeners and farmers interested in participating or learning more can contact Clay County Ag Extension at (931) 243-2311.
The group would like to have the farmers market up and running for this growing season.
