Set Clocks Back And Check Detector Saturday

When you spring forward Saturday night, be sure to check your smoke detector.

That’s the advice of Putnam County Fire Chief Tom Brown.

“The time change is just a benchmark that reminds me,” Brown said. “And the batteries need to be replaced, not just check that smoke detector. They need to physically replace the batteries whether they’re good or bad.”

The National Fire Protection Association reports three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms (38 percent) or no working smoke alarms (21 percent).

Brown said you should replace any smoke detector that has been in service ten years. New detectors include 10-year lithium batteries.

“It takes the remembering to change the batteries out of the equation,” Brown said.

Standard time ends at 2am Sunday morning. Set your clock ahead one hour. In case you wonder when you get the hour of sleep set back, set a reminder for November 4.
