Work could begin in the next few weeks on grading parking lots and installing drainage systems at Monterey’s Town Lake Park project.
The Monterey Board Of Mayor And Alderman approved a $55,655 bid from Elk Mountain Construction Monday night. The big includes grading of both road and parking, installation of culvert pipe to address drainage issues, installing new rock in parking areas, and paving handicapped access points.
“This is the first step in developing that 300 acres out there into a marquee-type recreational area,” Mayor Bill Wiggins said. “(We need) to exploit our natural resources.”
The old coal mine sits just off Highway 62 in Monterey. The city hopes to develop a number of both recreational and educational opportunities around the park.
“That property has been sitting out there since the mid 1980s and it’s ripe for development,” Wiggins said.
The Board of Aldermen also issued a permit Monday night allowing the new Fred’s store to sell beer. A new liquor store received its certificate of compliance from the board. The store, in the former Carl’s Super Market location at 207 N. Chestnut Street, should be opening soon.
