8,000 Easter eggs will be scattered across the Overton County Fairgrounds on April 3.
The Fairgrounds Volunteer Fire Department has partnered with the Fair Association to bring this first time event together. Fire Chief Travis Murphy said creating these events for kids are important for the department’s future.
“If we don’t get involved with kids your volunteer agencies just all go away,” Murphy said. “It’s something to give back to our community as well.”
Murphy said with all those eggs to hunt, he expects people from across the Upper Cumberland to attend. Murphy said these are the chances to show the softer side of firefighting compared to interacting with kids during emergencies.
“If we’re not there to help everybody, then how can people help us,” Murphy said. “Kids, you go to somebody’s house and the kids just distraught. When they see us outside of our duty gear and everything, it kind of lets them know we’re nothing scary and we’re just there really to help each other.”
Murphy said kids will be able to get their picture taken with the Easter Bunny and Marshall from the TV show Paw Patrol. Murphy said there’s even a special surprise hidden in those 8,000 eggs.
“We’re going to be partners with Overton County Agriculture Fair Board, they’re going to go in with us on this,” Murphy said. “The age groups are going to be 0 to three, four to six, seven to nine and then 10 to 12, there will be a $100 egg in each category.”
The Easter Egg hunt at the Overton County Fairgrounds will start at 10:00 AM on April 3. Murphy said this is the second attempt to make this even happen after last year was cancelled due to the pandemic.
