200th Anniversary of Gainesboro Celebrated with Ornament

The first ever ornament to celebrate the history of Gainesboro has been created by the Jackson County Historical Society.

The design is based on the Gainesboro court house and was decided on by everyone at the historical society. Jackson County Historical Society Treasurer Eldon Pippin said they hope this is just the beginning for their historical ornaments.

“We’ll be discussing this next month what the second one will be, and the third, of course we have in our plans a series,” Pippin said.

When asked about the importance of Gainesboro history, Pippin said certain parts of the Upper Cumberland would not be around without Gainesboro.

“We’ve always said if it wasn’t for Gainesboro there probably wouldn’t have been a Putnam County,” Pippin said.

A lot of Jackson County was taken to form Putnam County, Pippin said. You don’t have to live in Jackson County to get your hands on one of these ornaments though. Pippin said you can pay $25 to get one mailed to your home, or visit one of two locations in Jackson County.

“They can purchase it at the Historical Society Museum when it is open, and one of the banks in Gainesboro, First Freedom is selling it for us also and the supply will be limited,” Pippin said.

For $20 you can purchase the first in the series ornament. There were more events scheduled this year to celebrate 200 years of Gainesboro. However, those had to be cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19.
