White County Looking to Add HR Director

White County is looking to create a position for a Human Resources Director, something the county has never had.

County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said he has learned during his time in office, that a department head can be an expert in their field but might not be an expert in being a supervisor. Robinson said having an human resources expert will be a wise investment for White County.

“A lot of times these people don’t have the training and the knowledge that goes along with being a supervisor, as far as hiring and firing and policies and procedures for employees,” Robinson said. “That is a weakness or a void that we have here, there’s no training and stuff for that.”

Robinson said because it is such an important investment, he does not want to rush the process but hopes to have it filled by the start of 2021. Robinson said an ideal HR Director will have experience in both government and the private sector.

“That is one thing that I have found, where government and private business are kind of along the same lines,” Robinson said. “Employment laws are the same, there not really divided up between government and the private industry.”

Robinson said the time going into making the right hire is important because of how many people could be impacted. Robinson said it extends beyond the county government.

“We’re creating something here and I want to make sure it’s right,” Robinson said. “We’ll be laying the foundation that’s gonna be affecting the people of White County and the employees of White County.”

Before this position is filled, Robinson said when there has been an HR question it required meeting with attorneys. Robinson said attorney meetings brought on costs to the county.
