The White County Fair recognized as the 2024 Division A state champion.
White County Fair President Mike Wilson said fairs are judged based on a variety of things such as events, decoration of fairgrounds, volunteer help, and agriculture involvement. Wilson said volunteers make the White County Fair special.
“Obviously no different than any other year we put a lot of hard work and time into the event,” Wilson said. “But I just feel like we had a really good group of volunteers this year and a board of directors and everything went along just really great. Everybody works good together and just kind of a team environment and I really think that showed.”
Wilson said the county has won the award before but has not won the award in the past several years. Wilson said it feels good to be back on top and that the bar has been set higher for fairs to come.
“It just puts another spark in your energy level to go after that and try to bring that big award home to White County,” Wilson said. “So it just puts a new perspective on it for a lack of a better word but it just gets you excited about wanting to put on the best that you can and even bring more new things and ideas to the fair.”
Wilson said one thing that was different in the fair compared to previous years was switching up the event schedule. Wilson said the move to change the schedule ended up being a good move.
“We had two nights of derby and we had a new kids event that we put on,” Wilson said. “Just several different things that we moved around in our schedule to try to attract more people to come out to the fair and I feel like it worked.”
Wilson said the award is not just for the fair board but for the whole county. Wilson said he appreciates the first responders who volunteer time to ensure people are safe while having fun.
