Obituaries For Tuesday, June 28

Ms. Cynthia Jane Ganger “Cindy” Richardson, age 88 of Sparta, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at her residence. The family has chosen cremation, and no services will be held. Ms. Richardson was born September 22, 1933, in West Milton, OH, the daughter of the late Opal Loaine Shearer Ganger. She earned a degree and had a career in nursing, then later went to work for the United States Postal Service and served as a mail carrier for many years. She was an active member of the American Volksmarch Association (AMA) and participated in designed six-mile walks all over the country. Survivors include four children, Lisa (Larry) Bohannon of Sparta, Lori (Karl) Schmidt of Jamestown, OH, Kirk (Angie) Richardson of Germantown, OH, and Greg Richardson of Dayton, OH.

Mrs. Mary Jane Horan Gooch, age 89 of Sparta, passed away Friday, June 24, 2022, at her residence. The family has chosen cremation, and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Mrs. Gooch was born October 21, 1932, in Nashville, the daughter of the late Joseph Watrace & Willie Cliff Thomas Horan. She was a homemaker, but also had a career as a medical technician and did some bookkeeping. She was an active member of Sparta First United Methodist Church where she served as a communion steward. Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Richard Gooch; a daughter, Miriam Gooch (Steve) Anslinger; a son, Roy W. (Amy) Gooch.

Mr. Harold Keith Thurman, age 79 of Sparta, passed away Friday, June 24, 2022, at his home. Services will be held at a later date. He was born March 23, 1943, in Sparta, the son of the late Frank Thurman and the late Mildred Smith Thurman. Harold worked at Mallory Controls for over 30 years. He loved photography, history, gardening and learning new things through the weekly newspapers, internet, and documentaries. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Hilda Luna Thurman; two sons, Terry Lynn (Becky) Thurman and David Eric Thurman.

Graveside services for Mr. Marshall Boyd Qualls, age 26 of Cookeville, will be held Wednesday, June 29, at 10:00 a.m., at West Cemetery in the Burgess Falls community. Mr. Qualls passed away Friday, June 24, 2022 at his home. He was born October 4, 1995, in Cookeville, the son of Sammy Lynn Qualls and Lori Jean Herron Qualls of Cookeville. Marshall was a graduate of Cookeville High School, where he specialized in auto mechanics and building trades. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. In addition to his parents, survivors include two sisters, Samantha (Michael) Russell of Algood and Khristen Noel Qualls of Chattanooga; a brother, Logan Samuel Qualls of Algood. Visitation will be held Tuesday,  until 7:00 p.m. The family requests memorial donations be made to the funeral home for funeral expenses.

Funeral services for Mr. Charlie Edmond Martin, age 84 of Gainesboro, will be held Wednesday, June 29, at 11:00 a.m., at Presley Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Pharris Cemetery. Mr. Martin passed away Monday, June 27, 2022. He was born Tuesday, August 3, 1937, in Gainesboro, the son of the late Henry Martin and Eva Hensley Martin. Charlie worked as a route manager for Pepsi Cola Bottling Company in Michigan for 14 years. He then returned home to Tenneesee and started Martin and Sons Logging and Dozier Company in Jackson County. He then drove for Oster Trucking, then Ryder Spring Hill for the Saturn plant. He finally worked as Maintenance Supervisor for Jackson County for over 21 years, until his retirement. Charlie was a devout Christian and worshiped at Dudney’s Hill Church of Christ in Jackson County. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mary Trisdale Martin; a son, David (Denise) Martin of Gallatin. In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by a son, Larry Martin. Visitation will be held Tuesday until 8:00 p.m., and Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Maxine Mayberry, age 82 of Buffalo Valley, will be held Wednesday, June 29, at 1:00 p.m., at the Baxter chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Young Cemetery in the Center Grove Community of Jackson County. Mrs. Mayberry passed away Saturday, June 25, 2022, at Mabry Healthcare & Rehab in Gainesboro. She was born June 6, 1940, in Sparta, the daughter of the late James and Bertha Williams Lafever. Maxine was a homemaker and a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Cookeville. She enjoyed genealogy and working in her flowers and garden. Survivors include two daughters, Connie (Rick) Sutton and Doris McBroom, both of Buffalo Valley; two sons, Gary Mayberry of Bloomington Springs and Roger (Heidi) Mayberry of Monterey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,George Lee Mayberry; a daughter, Loretta Clayton; a son, Harold Mayberry. Visitation will be held Tuesday until 8:00 p.m., and Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

Funeral services for Amaria Denise Porter Smith, the seven-day-old daughter of Bobby Porter, Jr. of Cedar Grove and Kristin Page Smith of Cookeville, will be held Wednesday, June 29, at 2:00 p.m., at Anderson Upper Cumberland Funeral Home in Gainesboro. Burial will follow in Dodson Branch Cemetery. Amaria passed away Sunday, June 26, 2022, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. In addition to her parents, survivors include two brothers, Bryan Porter of Cedar Grove and Gavin Porter of Cookeville. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorial donations may be made to assist with funeral expenses by contacting the funeral home.

Graveside services for Mrs. Marie Chapman, age 87 of Algood, will be held Thursday, June 30, at 11:00 a.m., at Algood City Cemetery. Mrs. Chapman passed away Monday, June 27, 2022. Visitation will be held at the graveside.

Funeral services for Mrs. Plina Marie (Sliger) Wilson, age 94 of Cookeville, will be held Thursday, June 30, at 11:00 a.m., in the chapel of Presley Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Crest Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Wilson passed away Saturday, June 25, 2022, at her daughter’s home. She was born Wednesday, June 13, 1928, in Sparta,the daughter of the late Joe Sliger and Nettie Myrtle (Tollison) Sliger. Plina was a member of West View Baptist Church and also attended Cedar Hill Baptist. She worked alongside her husband, Charles, owning and operating Wilson Shell on Spring & Willow. She also worked at Spring Street Deli for approximately 29 years. Survivors include her husband, Herbert Kilgore; three children, Chuck Wilson, Sandra Randolph, and Jeff (Debra) Wilson; four stepchildren, Michael (Kelly) Kilgore, Bernice(Joe) Cox, Brett (Kristin) Kilgore, and James (Jenny) Kilgore. In addition to her parents, Plina was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Charles Wilson. Visitation will be held Wednesday, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., and Thursday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

Funeral services for Mr. Daniel Lee Cole, age 45 of Walling, will be held Thursday, June 30, at 1:00 p.m., at Oak Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Saylors Cemetery. Mr. Cole passed away Monday, June 27, 2022, at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville. He was born Friday, November 19, 1976, in Cookeville, the son of Ruby Rutledge Cole and the late Harry Cole. He was known to many family members as “World Book,” as he was a wealth of useless knowledge. Daniel was also a Braves baseball lover and a Tennessee Vols fan. In addition to his mother, survivors include two sisters, Terri (Terry) Howard and Christy (Chris) Wyse; a brother, Andrew Cole. Visitation will be held Wednesday, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Funeral services for Mrs. Linda Carol Mertz, age 75 of Cookeville, will be held Thursday, June 30, at 2:00 p.m., in the chapel of Crest Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Byers Cemetery in Jackson County. Mrs. Mertz passed away Monday, June 27, 2022, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. She was born Thursday, January 16, 1947, in Gainesboro, the daughter of the late Ewin and Martha Lou (Chaffin) Mayberry. Linda attended Freehill Church of Christ and worked several years in the furniture industry. Survivors include a son, Dewayne (Karen) Mertz of Cookeville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Mertz. Visitation will be held Wednesday, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., and Thursday, from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service.

A limited memorial service for Mr. Christopher “Chris” DeVol Myers, age 51 of Cookeville, will be held Sunday, July 2. Mr. Myers passed away Friday, June 24, 2022, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. The family has chosen cremation. Chris was born Thursday, February 18, 1971, in Cookeville, the son of Patricia Pincheon Jones of Cookeville and the late McHenry Myers Jr. In addition to his mother, survivors include a sister, sister Kenya Myers of Atlanta GA.

A Celebration of Life service for Mr. Bernard Hollins Allred, age 92 of Cookeville, will be held Tuesday, July 5, at 1:00 p.m., at Cookeville Church of the Nazarene. Burial, with military honors, will follow at 4:00 p.m. in Clarkrange Cemetery. Mr. Allred passed away Saturday, June 25, 2022, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born July 18, 1929, in Clarkrange, the son of the late Emma Todd Allred and Virgil Edward Allred. He was United States Army veteran and was honorably discharged before his enlistment time ended due to family needs. He was a lifetime member of the Cookeville Church of the Nazarene, where he served in many capacities including the church board for many years. Survivors include his wife, Anna Faye Gilreath Allred; three children, Constance Allred (Jim) Maddux of Sparta, William “Bill” Allred of South Lebanon, OH, and Rev. Ed H. (Renee) Allred of Crosby, TX. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Wilma Lee Sewell Allred; a son, Gary Bernard Allred. Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
