Van Buren Looks to Add Curbside Trash Collection

Van Buren County is looking to bring trash collection to every household throughout the county.

Mayor Greg Wilson said the bid winner for solid waste collection would handle all solid waste and convenience centers would close. Wilson said the county has considered this move for quite sometime but will not accept a bid that does not benefit residents.

“We’ve been talking about it and exploring it, this too again, if it’s not economically… for the citizens of the county, they’ll reject the bids,” Wilson said. “What we want to do is make sure that it’s good for the county and the residents of course, most of all.”

Wilson said residents would get a 96 gallon trash can that’s collected and emptied once a week. Wilson said somethings would stay the same for solid waste disposal in the county though.

“Anything other than household garbage is the way it is now, you bring it to Spencer, that’s the only location you can take construction materials and things of that nature,” Wilson said. “That company would also, the winner of the bid if it’s accepted by the commission, then would take care of that as well.”

Wilson said the curbside service being added would be the reason to stop operations at convenience centers. He said the bid winner will take solid waste to its own location.
