Van Buren Jail Facility Nearing Completion

Van Buren County inmates have yet to be moved to the new jail facility.

How and when that happens will be a mystery to county residents, according to sheriff Eddie Carter.

“I’m going to use every asset I have available to make this as smooth as possible,” Carter said. “I’m not going to give a particular date for when it will happen just because of the safety and security reasons for that. The citizens in the county will wake up one day and we will be in the new building.”

Carter said the county still needs to place furniture in the new facility and complete other small projects before moving in. The county’s administrative office began utilizing the building several weeks ago.

“The county has undertaken a large building with a large sum of money connected to it, so we want it right when we occupy it,” Carter said.

The 50,000 square foot facility houses the jail, justice center, and all county administrative offices. County Mayor Greg Wilson said it was important to have all departments under one roof.

The new jail is designed to hold a total of 86 inmates and will be more economically efficient than the current jail.
