Van Buren Commissioner: Lower Property Taxes if Wheel Tax Passes

Van Buren County Commissioner Bill Mosley recommend the county commission look at lowering property taxes in 2021 if the wheel tax passes on the November ballot.

Mosley made the recommendation at Tuesday’s Commissioners meeting. Commissioner Brian Williams agreed with Mosley’s recommendation. Williams added that the commission should look at lowering property taxes once the county knows how much the $40 dollar wheel tax will generate for the county.

Budget Committee Chairman William Maxwell said getting those numbers in could take some time.

“I mean I think it’s something to take into consideration and look at, I just don’t want everybody to think that money’s gonna all be there immediately,” Maxwell said. “We’re only gonna see less than six months of it collected if it passes now.”

Maxwell said it would be taken into consideration when it is time to look at the budget. County Mayor Greg Wilson said to look at the full revenue projections, it could take until fiscal year 2022 and 2023.
