Upper Cumberland Landfill to Expand Vertically

The Upper Cumberland Landfill has started construction on a vertical expansion.

David Smith is the Vice President of  Upper Cumberland Solid Waste Management.

“TDEC has decided its more cost effective., if you can do a vertical lift, to do a vertical lift instead of lateral expansion,” Smith said. “Which you have to put all new construction in the bottom of it before you can start with lateral expansion.”

Smith said the vertical expansion allows for simpler and cheaper construction.

“Seven hundred thousand dollars just to get the new permit with all the construction that has to go into that,” Smith said.

The expansion adds eight years to the landfill’s capacity, Smith said.

The landfill expansion allows for seventeen total acres of the disposal area.

Smith said waste services is just as important as other state infrastructure.

“A lot of people don’t understand that that’s infrastructure in the community. We have to have waste services,” Smith said. “And these sites are already there in the community and by building onto them or letting them continue to operate you’re only making your community better structure wise. ”

Upper Cumberland Landfill receives waste from all over the Upper Cumberland.
