UC Sees Mixture Of Road Conditions, Black Ice In Some Counties

The Upper Cumberland saw a mixed bag of road conditions with some counties roadways being slicker than Thursday.

A majority of Putnam County roads had black ice, but Road Supervisor Randy Jones said as the day continued, roads have slowly thawed. Secondary roads remain slick. Jones said a decision on reopening Woodcliff Road will be made later on Friday.

Roads in Overton County are worse off compared to Thursday. Highway Superintendent James Norrod said there is widespread black ice, but main roads are becoming more passable through the day.

More fallen trees were reported this morning. Norrod said cleaning up the debris from the ice storm could take several weeks.

Jackson County 9-1-1 is reporting several secondary roads are covered in ice and snow. Black ice also present on some primary roads.

Clay County did not have many reports of black ice, according to Highway Superintendent Jason Browning. Browning said crews are making progress on clearing roads, but some secondary roads remain covered. Browning said primary streets are passable.

White County Highway Superintendent Clay Parker said their roads are similar with only some black ice. Parker said overall, most roads are passable. The highway department is out of salt and has a shipment from the state coming Monday.

Officials are asking drivers to be cautious in the Baker Mountain area of Van Buren County. According to the highway department, that area is clear, but slick spots remain. Otherwise, most roads are passable.

Each county reports that state highways are passable. Officials are asking residents to be cautious while driving on any roads with ice a possibility.
