Tennessee Tech taking steps to comply with a new state law that prohibits the use of certain social media platforms on university devices and networks.
News and Public Relations Director Jonathan Frank said Senate Bill 834 specifically prohibits using platforms operated or hosted by a company based in China. He said that includes social media like TikTok and WeChat.
“I would say that most importantly, nothing in the law prohibits individuals from accessing these platforms on their own devices using their own network data,” Frank said.
Frank said policymakers have been raising concerns about data security surrounding these platforms for some time. He said the bill has already been signed into law by Governor Bill Lee.
Frank said Tennessee Tech is not alone in making these changes. He said public universities across the state and in other states where similar laws have passed have been implementing similar policies.
