TTU Installing New Dispatch Program To Consolidate Police Record Keeping

Tennessee Tech’s Compliance Officer Greg Holt said university police will be using a new dispatch program as early as July.

The new automated system is a result of a state Comptroller’s audit released last year that found inaccuracies in crime logs and calls for service. Holt said the program will improve record keeping by consolidating the process.

“The issue was we had multiple paper records, and it was hard to make sure that all the information, it would be the same thing as a date or an incident, that it was the same across all five pieces of paperwork,” Holt said. “This new system that we are doing will help make sure that it is really just one.”

Holt said until then, university police check reports bi-weekly for errors. Holt said he believes the department has been under compliance since the findings.

“Right now, we have to periodically check the paper records,” Holt said. “The new computer system will make us be able to track much quicker, and the other thing is we will be able to check if there is a mistake in one of the four areas we have to complete the data.”

Holt said the new program will just make the record keeping process more efficient and consistent. At the same time, Holt said it would help with tracking trends on the university.

“It will be much easier and quicker for us to get a long term view,” Holt said. “Last year, the number of incidences of drinking on campus. Are they higher or lower? And if they are high, what can we do to lessen it, or if they are lower, what are we doing perhaps to prevent underage drinking for example.”

Holt said officers will begin training with the program once installation is complete.
