Tech Student Starts Magazine For LGBTQ Community In The UC

A Tennessee Tech student has started a magazine for LGBTQ teens and young adults in the Upper Cumberland.

CEO of “Girls, Gays, and Theys” Magazine Lane Mochow said that he wanted to create a magazine of more substance than typical teen magazines. He said that he also wanted it to be an outlet for LGBTQ youths to feel a sense of community.

“A way for teens and young adults to have access to our real lives and our real experiences from us,” Mochow said. “And a way to connect and be like ‘Yeah, I’m not alone in this.'”

Mochow said that the magazine will have articles, poetry, advice, and photography among other things. He said that his goal is to branch out past the Upper Cumberland.

Mochow said he grew up reading various teen fashion magazines.

“They would also have that one heartfelt ‘actual’ article,” Mochow said. “And it was supposed to be about body positivity, or when gay marriage was legalized it would be ‘I’m in a relationship and my parents are very supportive,’ and stuff like that. Then the next page would be like, ‘Here’s some exercises to get your summer body!’ And I was like ‘Oh my gosh, you just went against everything you just said.'”

Mochow said that he hopes “Girls, Gays, and Theys” can be non-profit that helps real kids get through real experience and find their own sense of hope. He said they hope to shed light on different people sharing different experiences.

Mochow said that the current edition of the magazine can be found online at ggtmag.com and that a new edition will be available February 1st.
