Tech Receives NCAA Grant For Student Athletes

Tennessee Tech received a NCAA grant to fund sports nutrition and mental health practices.

Director of Sports Nutrition Anthony Paradis said the grant is $20,000.

“Last year, I did a pilot test of a nutrition and mental health course that was open to all student-athletes. It is being re-designed this year with a strong mental health component,” Paradis said.

Paradis plans to incorporate 10 training modules and a rigorous evaluation component for the 300 student-athletes. An online class series called Food for Thought will also be used in the curriculum.

Three other colleagues and Paradis are among five teams who were awarded the grant.

“I am also the only project director without a Ph.D. to receive funding,” Paradis said.

The funding came from the Innovations in Research and Practice Grant Program. The program supports research and data driven pilot projects designed to enhance mental health for student athletes. Many tech athletes said they have seen a positive difference from the new program.
