Story Time Hour Offered For Kids In Rock Island This Summer

Rock Island’s Cedar Grove Community Center is offering an hour of story time for kids this summer.

Family, Community and Education Club President Sarah Hillis said starting June 29, every Tuesday at 10:00 AM will be dedicated to the story hour. Hillis said this effort was about engaging kids and getting them together.

“We wanted to be able to offer them something to do that would bring them into the community club,” Hillis said. “And also bring their parents or grandparents or whoever they’re staying with. And be able to utilize the playground equipment that the city has put up.”

Hillis said a light lunch will provided as well, hopefully offering some relaxation and downtime for parents during this hour. She said the goal is to not let kids forget the importance of books, while cooped up inside.

“We want them to be able to keep that enforced in what they were doing,” Hillis said. “And be able to maybe not stay in front of the TV and their computer activity, and also be active, be outdoors a little bit.”

Hillis said that with this being a new offering, she will be doing most of the readings at the start. However, she said once things get going, other community members could step in and read to the kids.

“I think as it gets going, some of our elderly members will also get a little bit more excited and a little bit more at ease with doing this,” Hillis said. “Because it is going to be a weekly program.”

Hillis said that anyone with children can come to 38 Cedar Grove Road in Rock Island for the story hour each Tuesday. She said that there will be rocking chairs and amenities available for anyone who has a small child or infant and plans to attend.
