Stone Memorial’s Capps Eclipses 3K, Mr Basketball Finalist

A finalist for Mr. Basketball, Stone Memorial senior guard Cade Capps set another milestone in the Tuesday night victory.

Capps scored a layup underneath the basket with under three minutes to go in the fourth quarter to reach 3,000 points for his career. Capps said he knew since Monday how much he needed to hit the mark.

“When you start the game, you really don’t think about it as much,” Capps said. “When we kind of got in the flow of the game, I realized towards the end I was getting close and my teammates did such a good job trying to just help me with it and they did a great job the whole game. They’ve been helping me out all year.”

Capps became the 25th player in TSSAA history to reach 3,000 career points. Thursday, he was named a Mr. Basketball Finalist in 3A, joining Ty Cobb of Upperman.

Capps plays his final regular season game Friday night.

“Really getting to share the moment with my teammates, the guys you share your ups and downs with, that was pone of the best parts of it for me,” Capps said.

Stone Memorial Head Coach Neil Capps said the experience is a neat one that he shared Tuesday night.

“As a parent, the things you try to stress to your kids is work hard, the work will pay off.” Coach Capps said. “For them to trust you and to dig in and go to work and see the fruits of that labor come to fruition, it’s a really neat deal and it’s a proud moment.”

Cade Capps concludes his season averaging over 25 points a game for the third straight year.
