Stone Memorial High Hosts Second-Annual Food Drive

Stone Memorial High School is accepting donations for its second-annual Food Drive through Oct. 30.

SMHS Counselor Andrea Simmons said food donated will go towards students at the high school who are most in need.

“We obviously live in a rural area and we have many students that are on free and reduced lunch here at school,” Simmons said. “Many of them go home to a limited amount of food, so for us to provide food for them on the weekends is just a wonderful thing and we are just very pleased to be able to help out our Panther students.”

Simmons said she and other faculty members at Stone Memorial pitched in to create the food drive last year.

“Ms. Lesley Williams and I just had a burden for our students that went home hungry on Fridays and possibly didn’t eat over the weekends,” Simmons said. “We just kind of brainstormed and with the help of our administration and our faculty, we just gathered together and came up with this plan and we are just thrilled to be able to help our Panther students.”

Simmons said the event benefits more than just the students who are receiving the food.

“Parents are thrilled for any assistance with food for the weekends,” Simmons said. “For these students to be able to take snacks, drinks, and easy-to-fix items home with them, it can make the difference in not eating for the weekend.”

Simmons said anyone can donate to the food drive by dropping items off at Stone Memorial High School. Non-perishable and easy-to-prepare food items are being accepted. Any questions regarding the food drive can be directed towards Simmons by calling SMHS.
