State Recognizes Volunteer Firefighters For Their Service This Week

It is Tennessee Volunteer Firefighter Week.

The first full week in March each year is spent recognizing volunteer firefighters for their service. Jackson County Central Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jeff Conn said without volunteers, communities such as Jackson County would go without fire protection.

Conn said protecting families and spreading awareness is why he volunteers. Conn said the job can be difficult though when balancing a full-time job while also risking your life to help others.

Conn said being a firefighter goes further than emergencies. Conn said school appearances, smoke alarm replacements and CPR training are just a few programs offered to the community.

Conn said volunteer fire departments today face a growing trend of recruiting challenges. Conn said the appeal of being a volunteer firefighter has decreased over the years with less people willing to participate.
