State Champions Return To Town With Hundreds

A Sheriffs Department escort and thousands of fans welcomed the Upperman Lady Bees back to Baxter Saturday night.

“Let’s Go Upperman,” the crowd chanted in unison as the buses rolled into the high school parking lot around 9:30pm. Just two hours earlier, the Bees defeated Macon County 64-62 in overtime to win a second consecutive championship.

The team hoisted the state championship Gold Ball above its heads as they ran into the gym where fans gathered for a pep rally. Each member of the team introduced as Upperman fans cheered.

“I just want to thank everyone for being here,” Tournament MVP Akira Levy told the crowd. “Everything you guys do for us is very greatly appreciated. I’m so glad we could get a second gold ball for you.”

Head Coach Dana McWilliams thanked the seniors for their contributions to the program which produced three straight championship game appearances.
