Sparta Sees No Tax Increase in New Budget

Sparta citizens will not see a tax increase in 2018-2019 fiscal year budget.

The Sparta Board of Mayor and Alderman passed the second and final reading of the new budget this evening.

Jeff Young is the Mayor.

“The most prominent and evident thing I can see is there is no tax increase. We work extremely hard to try to work with our means and live within the budget we have set up,” Young said. “We don’t want to have to put any more burden on the taxpayers than we have to. We scrimp and save everywhere we can to keep the tax the same.”

Young said this budget protects the citizens from unnecessary tax increases.

“You see some communities, regardless of what the need is that have a standard increase. Whether that be two cents, three cents. Like that every year,” Young said. “And there has not been a tax increase in Sparta in a long, long time. And we try to be conservative, sometimes maybe even too conservative. But we are going to be as frugal with the tax dollars as we can.”

Overall, Young said the new budget will serve as a win for Sparta taxpayers.

The budget will take effect on July 1.
