The City of Sparta has received a T-DOT grant to help install two turn signals on West Bockman Way.
Mayor Jerry Lowery said both turn signal lights will be installed for left turn lanes on the intersections of Spring Street and Moore Street. Lowery said those intersections have had some problems.
“We see people trying to you know, that car is not coming too fast let’s try to beat it,” Lowery said. “So that type of thing happens so that’s the issue. It’s there, everything is there the turn lanes are there it’s just the turn signal is not there. So once we get that turn signal in, boom it will be a lot safer for everybody.”
Lowery said he is still waiting to hear from T-DOT of when the turn signals will be installed.
“I don’t know the timeline yet,” Lowery said. “We just got word a couple of weeks ago that we got it and I’m guessing springish. I don’t know that. I’ll have to look at that they have not given us a time frame yet but hopefully, by the summer it’ll happen.”
City Administrator Tonya Tindle said the amount of the grant is still unknown but the grant would cover the installation of the turn signals. Lowery said turn signals for those intersections have been a long time coming.
“It’s been like that forever,” Lowery said. “I don’t know how long it’s been but as long as I can remember them turn signals haven’t been working and they should have been addressed a long time ago.”
